Who Are We

Welcome to Medical and Molecular Laboratories Limited (MML)

Medical and Molecular Laboratories Limited (MML) is a registered, not-for-profit NGO operating out of Makerere University College of Health Sciences.
We exist to fix the gaps that undermine healthcare in Africa: poor diagnostics, weak laboratory systems, inconsistent research support, and limited training capacity.

Since 2008, we’ve supported health institutions across Uganda and the continent to strengthen diagnostics, advance research, and build sustainable systems that improve patient outcomes.

We don’t just advise… we execute.

Why Choose Us

Our teams include laboratory specialists, QMS experts, molecular scientists, bioinformaticians, internal auditors, grant managers, and experienced project leaders.
We don’t learn on the job—we bring proven capacity.
Organizations partner with MML because:

  • We’re experienced and technically competent
  • We deliver in difficult environments
  • We understand local systems and global standards
  • We combine science, logistics, IT, and grant management under one roof
  • We are cost-effective and reliable

What We Do

Our teams work inside clinical and research environments to deliver measurable, high-value results. We provide practical, technical, and administrative support to research and health programs, with deep capacity in:

  • Laboratory accreditation (CAP-LAP and others)
  • Clinical and research laboratory support
  • Molecular and genomic testing
  • Bioinformatics services
  • Biorepository setup and management
  • Grant management & compliance
  • Training & capacity building
  • Procurement & logistics for research and clinical labs
  • ICT solutions for laboratory networks and data management

Why We Exist

Health systems in Africa face chronic challenges:

  • Limited diagnostic capacity
  • Shortage of skilled personnel
  • Under-resourced training programs
  • Poor data systems
  • Weak quality assurance

These problems delay diagnosis, undermine research, and cost lives. MML was established to provide hands-on solutions that strengthen labs, empower institutions, and build capacity across Africa.

Our Focus Areas

  1. Clinical Microbiology
  2. Mycobacteriology
  3. Molecular Biology
  4. Immunology
  5. Genomics & Bioinformatics
  6. Research operations
  7. Laboratory quality systems
  8. Digital health

Technical Capacity

MML provides local and international technical assistance across multiple domains including QMS mentorship toward accreditation, laboratory auditing, biosafety, advanced TB diagnostics, molecular testing, genomic surveillance, data analysis, and clinical research. We supported the establishment and operation of a CAP-accredited BSL-3 Mycobacteriology facility at Makerere University, which contributes to major clinical trials.

Our team includes laboratory scientists, QMS experts, molecular biologists, bioinformaticians, clinical trial specialists, project managers, and monitoring and evaluation professionals.

Achievements

• Established biorepositories in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania
• Supported acquisition of major laboratory equipment for partner sites
• Delivered CAP accreditation support for NTRL, Makerere Microbiology, and JCRC TB Laboratory
• Supported accreditation efforts in Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Rwanda
• Enabled EQA participation and performance for labs in Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya
